Institute for Bioinformatics and Translational Research

The Institute for Bioinformatics and Translational Research is an academic unit of the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology (UMIT) with a central research interest in biomedical informatics. The Institute for Bioinformatics is partly funded by the Tiroler Zukunftsstiftung

Research in biomedical informatics crosses the boundaries between bioinformatics and medical informatics and is primarily concentrated on the information extraction and knowledge discovery in clinical studies and related functional genomics experiments. Quality assured collection, processing and management of molecular and clinical data and information followed by data mining, and biological and medical interpretation facilitate the discovery, verification and validation of biomarkers and drug targets.

The future of diagnosis and treatment in medicine will rely not only on utilizing current methods for disease detection and progress but also genomic, proteomic, metabolomic and other types of molecular data.
