International Expert Workshop: Advanced Challenges in Decision Analysis for Medicine and Public Health

International Expert Workshop: “Advanced Challenges in Decision Analysis for Medicine and Public Health” took place at UMIT on 16 January 2017, UMIT, Hall i.T./ Austria. Well-known international researchers Prof. Myriam Hunink (Professor of Radiology and Clinical Epidemiology, Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam) and Assoc.-Prof. Jeremy Goldhaber-Fiebert (Centers for Health Policy/Primary Care and Outcomes Research, Stanford University) as well as researchers from UMIT's Institute of Public Health, Medical Decision Making and Health Technology Assessment contributed to this top-class think tank workshop with advanced topics in decision analysis and causal inference.

Ass.-Prof. Ursula Rochau, who organized the workshop at UMIT, is excited about the great enthusiasm of the participants to present their own research ideas and to discuss them with the international experts.

Department Chair Prof. Siebert, who invited the international professors for a short-term sabbatical at UMIT, explains that such focused research retreats are an important instrument for the continuing promotion of research fellows: "This is how our young talents can closely experience international experts during their early development of innovative ideas – and they can discuss further questions during the days after the workshop and become part of the innovative thinking"

Prof. Myriam Hunink, Professor of Radiology and Clinical Epidemiology at Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Adjunct Professor of Health Decision Science at the Harvard School of Public Health, discussed challenges in medical decision making. Prof. Hunink commented the workshop as follows: „I found the workshop and the follow-up discussions with researchers from the group to be very inspiring. I had the opportunity to reflect, got new ideas, and made new plans. I had the opportunity to reflect, got new ideas, and made new plans.

Prof. Jeremy Goldhaber-Fiebert, Associate Professor of Medicine, Stanford University gave insights into the research frontier of value-of information analysis. His positive feedback was: „The faculty and students at UMIT are a dynamic, engaged and multidisciplinary group. It was a pleasure to be part of this event and to have discussions ranging from the big picture to important technical and methodological details. I felt welcomed and included throughout.”
